Starting from the elements gathered during the project analysis phase, the fabric type, adhesives, linings and every other detail needed for building the pattern are defined. This is the moment when any critical issues are identified, so they don’t emerge later, during prototyping.

2D pattern development

The pattern maker creates the pattern using 2D CAD software, a tool that ensures precision in controlling lines, proportions and cuts. When necessary, the pattern is printed and pinned onto a mannequin, a step that’s very useful for assessing how the garment behaves before working on the final fabric — especially in the case of complex cuts or a very specific fit requested by the brand.

3D preview to support the design process

Alongside 2D pattern making, a 3D preview of the garment can be added, digitally “sewn” onto an avatar with real measurements. This tool makes it possible to:

• Check proportions and lines;
• Assess how the fabric drapes;
• Correct any issues even before making the prototype;
• Reduce wasted time and materials.

In contract manufacturing work, the 3D preview is particularly valuable: it speeds up communication between client and pattern maker and simplifies discussions around changes and variants.

The moulage technique

Alongside CAD pattern making, Crea-Si has also trained its pattern makers in the moulage technique, which involves building the pattern directly on a mannequin, without starting from a 2D drawing. This approach is particularly well suited to draping and complex constructions, which are difficult to assess and visualise starting from a flat pattern. Combined with CAD skills, this technique makes it possible to handle both structured garments and soft or draped ones with the same level of quality.

Preparing toiles and trial garments

For more complex garments, or for collections that require great precision, toiles are made using fabrics similar to the final one. Toiles make it possible to concretely assess the volume of the garment and check whether the choices made on the pattern meet expectations, allowing adjustments to cuts, lengths and widths before moving forward — without any risk to the final garment.
